GENERAL:
Andres Pääbo is a Canadian artist situated in the Kawartha Lakes
wilderness south of Algonquin Park in east-central Canada, who has
pursued traditional fine art seriously since a teenager and it has been
his major occupation since 1985. Being of an older generation, he was
inspired while growing up in the 50`s and 60`s by the great fame of the
Canadian Group of Seven artists and in general `wilderness
impressionism`, but was also drawn to heightened realism and the
exploration of texture and form - using the same impressionistic brush,
but now in more detail so that viewed at a distance the realism was
strong, while up close the surface was alive with the character of
varying brush strokes, instead of uniform brush strokes that are not
very exciting.
ORIGINS: Andres Pääbo grew up in Scarborough east
of Toronto, Canada, in a quite regular suburban fashion. But the fact
that his aunt in Paris was a fine artist was a source of inspiration
for practice and self education and he was lucky to become part of
weekly young peoples art courses at the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario)
program for children on Fri. afternoons, and OCA (Ontario College of
Art) young peoples Sat. courses when a teenager, which focused him on
art quite early. He sketched and painted many commissioned portraits
for pocket money in his teenage years. However, as much as he would
have liked to pursue art for a living, back then one did not pursue a
career in fine art (as opposed to commercial art), but something else
and he proceeded to University of Toronto Faculty of Applied Science
and Engineering like his brother had. As a result, he spent the
following decade learning and then practicing civil engineering and
planning, while retaining his art as a diversion. But with strong
childhood and teenage beginnings in art, it was inevitable that after a
decade of `regular` life as a P. Eng. he would somehow get back to art,
and when there was an economic slowdown in the early 1980's he moved to
the family cottage, now his, to minimize expenses, and restored himself
to his early pursuit of art, and in a while it became his main pursuit.
TODAY:
From now 25 years pursuing art as a central occupation and being a
recognized traditional realist of wilderness subject matter, like all
true artists, his creative expression finds other avenues in spare time
- in particular related to the environment. But there is also his
pursuit of research into ancient boat peoples, general writing, digital
art, photography , website design, and more. Creativity knows no
bounds, but his pursuit of traditional realism focusing on natural
subject matter is his deepest pursuit, going back to age 10 when his
talent was first recognized.\n\n -- website design, operation, images
